career development

I went to a workshop today on writing. I was hoping it would have helpful tips so that I can avoid the black hole of writing that I see many dissertation students fall into. The presenter was an MD who had never written a thesis but still had some good suggestions for dealing with writers block and ideas to make writing a habit. I also heard back from two possible labs for maybe post-doc spots. I will be meeting with them both at my annual conference :) I still have a few people to email, but every time I email someone I get a sick feeling in my stomach. What if they say no? what if they agree to meet me only to say nice to meet you, I have no funding. (I got an email like that and am trying to decide how to reply, because they would meet with me if I found funding) But how do I find funding when I'm not sure when I'll be done (probably not until next December) and am trying to collect data, analyze it, write up papers and write my dissertation? I think I'm going to be stressed out until the meeting happens and then I will be stressed out until I know I might have a place to go.

Did you offer to write a grant with them? Maybe an NRSA from NIH?

I contacted some people I was interested in working with (and did not know their funding situation), and made it clear I was willing to write grants to get my own funding if they were willing to sponsor me as a post doc advisor.

Is your supervisor involved in the process at all? It seems that most of the students in my lab who went on to do a post doc got the position with the help of my supervisor.

psych post doc it is at NIH the internal division so I don't know if you can apply to external NIH for funding, but I told them I would be willing to do that and we are meeting!

yeah, I know of students here who had that advantage but it doesn't seem to work like that for me. I know one of the people I'm meeting with is calling my adviser to "hear the details about me." I know my adviser will talk to them for me then but actively calling the other way around, not so much.
