me and my mouth
In meeting a couple of weeks ago with my adviser I agreed to help out with the three visits for new prospective graduate students. So that means I have to take them around, arrange a lunch, and I agreed to pick one up from the airport an hour or so away from here. .... that was all well and fine. She said she would talk to our other graduate students to ask them to help out.
Fast forward to today's meeting. She still hasn't asked for their help, I've started to make arrangements for all three visits. Now I'm returning this kid to the airport on a Friday night and in addition to arranging 3 separate lunches, now I'm also in charge of "entertaining" them and taking 2 of them out for dinner. (Dinners and lunches are paid for for them, I have to pay for me out of my own pocket). Try to get graduate students to come to a lunch 3 times, now try to get them to join you for dinners too! Good luck w/ that! I told her that would be hard to do, our area has few number of students, they are usually busy and don't even want to make a lunch outing. Why oh why do I agree to do this stuff? If I wasn't careful I could of easily gotten roped into picking up and driving back one of the other students to the airport too. I don't mind helping out but on the other hand why do I have to take up my time do to this? Ideally I won't even be here much longer. So if they start in the Fall semester I will be on my way out by the Spring semester! argh!

That is rediculous, it's not your job to wine and dine perspective students. If you're going to do all those lunches and dinners I would tell your advisor that they are a financial hardship for you. If the department can't pay up,then your advisor (or whomever is recruiting them) should.

I was going to say the same thing as Psych Post Doc. I think the department should also cover your gas. The work you're doing isn't for you, it's for them. You shouldn't have to take on expenses to help them.

Yeah E was very angry about the gas money because and hour drive four times adds up! I will probably ask for that but I don't think it has been paid for in the past. Our department is crazy like that!
