Library judgement

I went to lunch w/ E today. On the way back I went by the public library to pick up the sequel to a book I got for Christmas. I haven't read a for fun ficiton book in a while so I didn't have my library card. When I went to check out the librarian gave me the evil eye. "You haven't been here in a while" she said. No, I haven't. "What is your address!?" (Even though she was holding my drivers license!) She raised an eyebrow, "you will have to bring your card next time with your picture ID or you won't be able to check out!" I left feeling remorseful and bad, like a little kid who messed up and knew it. So I haven't been reading lately is that a crime? I've been busy! [what if i had been in Somalia for six months doing charity work? or visiting a sick relative? or checking out books from the university library instead?]

It shouldn't really matter. It was a small thing but why do librarians seem so judgemental and cold like they are always looking down their nose at you?
